Finding the right people for your pain management practice isn’t always easy. As you plan ahead for hiring in the new year, here are five steps you can take to make the process easier:

  1. Review and revise job descriptions. When a long hiring process ends with a new employee who looked great on paper but flounders in practice, a poorly written or outdated job description may be to blame. Gather feedback from people who currently or recently occupied each position to pinpoint what the essential daily tasks of that position are. Create job descriptions that accurately describe the work and the skills required.
  2. Ask employees for referrals. Your employees each have their own personal and professional networks, and chances are, these are full of individuals who will offer the same great cultural and professional “fit” as your best employees. Don’t hesitate to ask your top performers to refer qualified individuals for certain positions.
  3. Seek out candidates in your own applicant files. If you maintain an electronic or paper-based applicant tracking system, chances are good you already have a pool of qualified candidates at hand. When hiring for a position, pull the applications from the last time you hired for the same position. Choose the most promising applications and spend some time on the Internet determining where each candidate is now and what they’ve accomplished since their last contact with your office. If you find one you just can’t pass up, extend an invitation for an interview.
  4. Find out who the best practitioners recommend. In addition to asking your best staff for recommendations, consider asking the top professionals in your area who they would recommend. For instance, fellow practice managers may be able to recommend outstanding administrative staff; practicing anesthesiologists in the area may know a “rising star” physician or a stellar CRNA they’re happy to recommend.
  5. Work with a recruiter. A staffing firm that specializes in placing pain management professionals will get to know the needs and approach of your particular practice in order to recommend the candidates that offer the best “fit.” The more detail you give your recruiter on who you’re looking for, the better the match.
