Every medical practice requires its staff to work as a team, and anesthesia is no exception. When the team doesn’t “fit” or other difficulties arise, it may be necessary to replace a member of the team.

Here are five steps to follow when seeking to replace a team member:

  1. Make the search “need to know” only. Don’t involve the rest of the staff or announce you intend to replace a certain person. By keeping your search for a new anesthesia professional quiet, you’ll free yourself up to seek the best candidate without disrupting your practice’s current work – which can easily disrupt patient care.
  2. Ask yourself why this person needs to be replaced. Clarify your reasons for replacing a member of the team. By doing so, you will pinpoint the qualities you want to look for most in their replacement. For instance, if you wish to replace a CRNA who crumbles in the face of correction or criticism, one of your primary goals in the search is to find a CRNA who can take direction and learn from it.
  3. Look discreetly. If you post on job boards, avoid mentioning the name of the practice. Better yet, talk to a staffing firm about ways to seek job candidates that don’t require you to make a public statement that might reveal the search too soon. Your staffing partner knows how to perform a candidate search that is extensive, yet discreet.
  4. Consider passive candidates. “Passive” candidates are those candidates who already have jobs, but who will consider switching to a new employer if the culture and opportunities are right. Recruiters specialize in knowing who the passive candidates are in the fields they serve. The added bonus of working with a passive candidate is they often wish to keep the search discreet as well – meaning they won’t “spill the beans” until you’re ready to announce the new hire.
  5. Work closely with your recruiter. Your staffing partner can keep the search for a new candidate off your employees’ radar by taking on many of the early tasks involved, from posting job openings to screening resumes. This allows you to focus on finding the right person without having to explain or hide the process.
