Medical staff are in high demand. Not only will you have a hard time finding them, it may be even more difficult finding the right ones—top performers who mesh well with your culture and get along great with your patients. Building your “dream team” is equal parts attracting and retaining the right workers, and it may seem like a difficult task. But you can take steps to make it much easier on yourself.

To staff up with the medical employees you need to help your practice build and maintain a strong reputation, you can implement any of the following:

  1. Offer competitive wages. Money talks. This is true across the board—from specialists and generalists, to techs and billing staff. Check the Bureau of Labor Statistics to research current salaries and be willing to offer at or above the current industry rates.
  2. Provide rich benefits. Salary is not everything, and a great benefits package translates into value beyond earned income. Consider offering the features that will help your employees stay in good whole health—physically, mentally and financially. This includes medical, prescription, vision and dental coverage; a wellness program; an Employee Assistance Program (EAP); financial counseling services; a 401(k) with employer matching; adequate paid time off, etc.
  3. Build a strong corporate culture. Who isn’t drawn in by companies that offer on-site delis, workout facilities, fun break rooms, captivating office designs, open-minded corporate policies, etc. Creative company cultures create positive energy and pique the interest—and loyalty—of top talent.
  4. Look in the right places. You can increase your chances of finding ideal candidates if you partner with professional industry organizations and utilize their job search functions. You can also interact with potential employees through an online presence on social media. But understand that your search might yield just active candidates—and finding passive candidates could require the assistance of a recruiter.
  5. Keep open communication. You can help ensure your workers remain productive by speaking with them regularly and listening to their feedback. By holding weekly meetings and regular one-on-ones, you can gauge the opinions of your workers—and implement changes that help keep your policies and procedures running smoothly. This will also help you maintain job satisfaction among your staff.
  6. Treat them right. Little extras can make a big difference in employee satisfaction. Bringing in surprise coffee and donuts, treating workers to lunch, extending sincere appreciation and giving recognition where it’s due and other similar perks can all help your medical team love where they work.
