Even if you are experienced and highly qualified, interviewing for a new pain management job can be nerve-wracking. You’re meeting new people with unknown expectations and you want to present yourself in a manner that demonstrates you are up to the challenge. With a little preparation, you can go into the interview with confidence and exit with the job in the bag.

Be prepared – the basics.

They likely already have your resume, but print out a few on good quality paper in case they are needed. Bring a pen or two that won’t let you down and a nice notebook. A leather-bound portfolio or clipboard works well. Make sure you are well-groomed and your suit is pressed. Lean toward more conservative attire.

Ace the interview.

Write down and memorize some applicable anecdotes about your pain management career. Examples could include times you were able to resolve a particularly difficult case, specific challenges you’ve faced, mistakes you’ve made and what you’ve learned from them.

Pain management is frequently a group effort. Emphasize your ability to work as part of a team and share stories that demonstrate this skill.

You will probably interview with several people, either all at once or sequentially. If you are given a panel interview, be sure that you make eye contact with each of the interviewers and take note of their names.

Interview the interviewer.

Always remember that interviewing is a two-way street. Prepare some questions that demonstrate your knowledge and help you learn more about the practice and your duties. This will enable you to make an informed decision about accepting or rejecting any potential offers.

Check your references.

Make sure your references are expecting the call from your potential employer and know what to say. Don’t lead them on so they seem coached when called; however, you could ask them to focus on your diagnostic skills or share a success that you are especially proud of.
